Everyone has been asking lately about how Henry's doing. Is he making friends? Liking his roommates? Enjoying classes? Staying healthy?  I think it's safe to say that Hen is living his best Bama life! RTR!!

A Long Story

Image
I got this in my inbox yesterday and it was the best feeling!! I've been donating blood every 8 weeks for about a year and a half now and this was the first time I was notified that I was a perfect match for someone in need. Given what happened the day that I donated, getting this email was even more special. It's kind of a long story though... The morning that Matt and I went to donate, we had walked three miles beforehand and it was super hot and humid outside. I had some water and a quick breakfast when we got home and then we left for base. We always donate at the mobile bus and that day it was at the BX on Eglin. I went in first, and because we didn't have appointments, I was done before Matt was even hooked up. I told him that I was just going to wait for the him in the BX. I started walking across the parking lot and had a quick chat with the Firestone Tire guy and right as he and I passed each other I started to feel weak. I was probably mid-way between the mobile b

Camp Helen State Park

Image
Two weekends ago we went to  Camp Helen State Park  in Panama City Beach and it was so cool! The state park has one of the largest coastal dune lakes in Florida, so you get the best of both worlds - kayaking on a lake and swimming in the ocean. We pretty much had the place to ourselves and will definitely be back!  It's been interesting to figure out what weekends look like with just the three of us, but we're making it happen. Fingers crossed Viv doesn't get sick of Matt and I anytime soon!! Hanson Party of Three

Day One

I did it.  I signed up.  I'm doing this.

Homeschool 2.0

Image
When Viv got her Covid-19 vaccine in June we told her that was her ticket back to in-person school this fall. When school started 4 weeks ago, we all crossed our fingers and hoped that it would work out.  Well, it didn't.  In the first three days of school, three of her teachers tested positive for Covid, and kids starting falling out left and right. Vivian was one of only a hand full of kids and staff that wore a mask, and she said she knew that kids were making fun of her because of it. That didn't bother her though; thankfully, she knew she was on the right side of that fight. What bothered me was the dishonesty by the school and school district. I can accept a lot of things, but lying when it comes to the health and safety of one of my kids, isn't one of them.  I could spend an hour writing about the lack of health protection in this community. Denial doesn't even begin to describe it. Zero mask wearing on top of one of the lowest vaccine rates in the state, on top

Race Day

Friday marked Maxwell's first official Lycoming cross country meet! This is the Cross Country Preview put out by Lyco where he was described as "senior newcomer", which cracked me up. Nothing like coming into an NCAA sport your senior year in college!  https://lycomingathletics.com/news/2021/9/2/mens-cross-country-2021-lycoming-cross-country-preview-back-at-it.aspx?fbclid=IwAR2FGN75vM1tS-G5ez_AZxXOiFy7gJIZW0DDFSihnXE8SoXp07uZ8_R0KJ0 This is the post-race article. I know nothing about cross country, but Maxwell's results seem impressive to me! More than anything though, he was so excited afterwards and said he had a great time. I can't tell you how happy that made me!  https://lycomingathletics.com/news/2021/9/3/womens-cross-country-young-warriors-impress-at-misericordia-invitational.aspx?fbclid=IwAR3gSWsW57J7OXwdleBzBPjL_z-dXb5hMEPJPbpdPl90_8t2GvODN9gRgEg Let's go Warriors!!!

When Vivian was little I used to describe her as "just happy to be alive". She was always being toted from one of the boys' activities to another. She napped in the car and tagged along to playdates, always seeming to be the younger one or the only girl. But she never complained. She was just "happy to be alive".  Fourteen years later and she's still happy to be alive. Vivian is by far the most empathetic and genuinely kind young person that I know. When she's happy, she's so happy and when she's sad, she feels it deep in her soul. She wants everyone around her to feel included and and loved. She'll always ask you how your day is going and she truly wants to know the answer. She is the first with a "please" and a "thank you" and the door is never closed and the phone is never hung up without her saying "I love you".  Viv's not perfect, but gosh, she's full to the brim of goodness.  Hurricane Ida made land
